The rating of the world’s most attractive places of interest has been recently released by Tripadvisor, the famous website for trip planning and booking. Duomo, the Milan cathedral dedicated to St Mary of the Nativity, is among the top ten most appreciated tourist attractions. The closest competitors of Duomo are Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), еру Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in Saint Petersburg (Russia) and the Taj Mahal in Agra (India)
The algorithm of the rating
“Historic places do not just look beautiful. They keep a piece of the local culture inside and the story they can tell us can be truly charming.” – Says Valentina Quattro, an Italian representative of Tripadvisor. – “The travellers who wish to discover the most attractive world’s destinations not only can read the other travellers’ reviews on or website, but also book special guided excursions to the most popular attractions, like Duomo in Milan, as well as exclusive customized tours and tickets in pre-sale directly on Tripadvisor”.
Tripadvisor states that the rating of the world’s best attractions has been created according to the algorithm that took into consideration the quantity and the quality of the reviews and the feedback comments left by tourists in the latest 12 month for all the places of interest in the world. 706 historic places in 82 countries have taken part in the competition.
Duomo: the beauty inspired by religion
For many centuries religion has inspired artists to create the most fascinating architectural pieces of arts. Italy is especially famous for its majestic architecture. For this reason it’s not surprising that five out of ten Italian historic places appreciated by tourists the most are churches and cathedrals: San Peter’s Basilica in Rome (1st), Duomo cathedral in Milan (2nd), Pantheon in Rome (5th), Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral in Florence (7th) and San Marco Basilica in Venice (10th).
The national attraction rating includes also the Michelangelo square in Florence, Colosseum, Trevi Fontain and Navona square in Rome, Doge’s Palace in Venice.
