Dora Sarchese Winery

?? Leggilo in italiano

From the mountains to the sea, through winding hills, Abruzzo offers a natural landscape in constant evolution accompanied by an equally varied food and wine offer. A rich and generous land, Abruzzo offers an infinite variety of unique flavours and aromas, among which, without a doubt, that of its wines stands out.
The ancient Abruzzo winemaking tradition has undergone stages of profound transformation that have led it over time to great qualitative growth, thanks above all to the enhancement of the territory and its most important indigenous vines as well as to a new generation of winemakers and entrepreneurs of sector. In the scenario of the now established Abruzzo wine reality, Dora Sarchese Winery, a family-run company located in Villa Caldari, a hamlet of Ortona, a dynamic town overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is noteworthy.

Born in the eighties from the entrepreneurial art of Domenico D’Auria, called Mimì, The Dora Sarchese Winery is today a valid company that has established itself in the market by carving out an important space with an offer of high quality wines. Redesigned by the Architect Rocco Valentini, this structure in which the old and the new blend perfectly, contains the story of a family dedicated to this historic activity, to which it has always been able to add deep passion and ingenuity. A clear example is the NITAE project, born from the selection of ancient and rare plants of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with which a very small vineyard was created, consisting of only a thousand vines arranged to form a compass rose, which every year attracts friends and customers of the winery for hand picking and to participate in the great pressing festival.
Not only a producer of quality wines, Dora Sarchese Winery is also and above all a place of welcome, where the skilled hands of Mrs. Dora, Mimì’s wife, are entrusted with the care of catering. With her, to lead the winery, her son Nicola, a man of great talent and promoter of brilliant initiatives, always suited to the culture of hospitality.
Crossing the threshold of Dora Sarchese means entering a place that is a keeper of knowledge, surrounded by intertwining vines, where you can enjoy a good glass of Montepulciano that flows directly from the Wine Fountain while listening to incredible life stories of those who believed in it and still believe; of those who love the area and work every day to take care of it. Dora Sarchese Winery is a place where the passion for the land and the love for what it offers reign, where to rediscover the proud flavour of Abruzzo traditions, now counted among the Treasures of Italy 2019.

The Dora Sarchese Winery was born in the eighties from the entrepreneurial art of Domenico D’Auria, called Mimì, patriarch of the winery. Great progenitor, he has handed down passion and ability to an entire family that today carries out an activity that is the reflection of a deep and ancient bond with the territory and its products. He passed away in 2002 and a line of wines been dedicated to him, a range that speaks of territorial identity and simplicity, rightly called Mimì. Today, his wife Dora, to whom Mimì dedicated the cellar, is queen of the kitchen of “Casa Dora”, the part of the company dedicated to catering and eno-tourism. The management of the winery is instead entrusted to his son Nicola D’Auria, national President of the Wine Tourism Movement and active promoter of initiatives that give prestige to the Abruzzo wine sector.
Renovated and enlarged in 2007, Dora Sarchese Winery today represents one of the most welcoming and innovative spaces in the regional wine production panorama. The company produces wines only from indigenous Abruzzo grape varieties such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano, Pecorino, Cococciola and Moscato. Since the early 1990’s, it has stood out as one of the first wineries to make Classic Method Sparkling Wines from Abruzzese grape varieties and in particular the first ever to make a Classic Method Sparkling Rosé based on Montepulciano D’Abruzzo.
The Dora Sarchese Winery, designed by the famous architect Rocco Valentini, been conceived as a versatile space in which the production cycle and eno-gastronomic moments coexist, an ideal place for birthday parties, graduation parties and other small ceremonies. It is also a space of innovation in the field of wine and tourism hospitality. It hosts, in fact, the Wine Fountain along the Way of St. Thomas, inaugurated in 2016 which, over the years has become a real monument to Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, visited by tens of thousands of wine tourists as well as by pilgrims traveling along the famous walking route that connects the cities of Rome and Ortona.
Another very successful project is NITAE: a vineyard of 1000 saplings arranged in the shape of a wind rose where an ancestral vine of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (over 100 years old) is grown. Harvested by hand, pressed in an ancient tank made of stone and vinified by customers and friends of the winery during a big party organized every year on the farm on the first Sunday of October. So the wine produced, the NITAE, is kept in a ceramic casket made by a famous Abruzzese artist, and it is possible to buy it only by visiting the cellar.
