We are in the middle of the Gran Sasso e Monti Della Laga National Park, at 1300 meters above sea level: in the famous Lake Campotosto we can see the exceptional urban and naturalistic heritage of Abruzzo. In the hamlet of Mascioni, five hundred meters from the shores of lake, we found Locanda Mausonium, tourist accommodation that offers the opportunity to experience the unique performances offered by mountain waters and to enjoy the gastronomy of the region in total relax. The enhancement of one’s own cultural traditions and the awareness of the giant heritage through which to marvel and to amaze are the reasons why Locanda Mausonium is counted among our Tesori d’Italia in 2019.
Locanda Mausonium rises where once there was the home of the grandparents of the managers, teachers at elementary school in the town; at the time, Mascioni had about two thousand inhabitants, compared to about fifty today. The building was renovated in 2011. Working since 2013 it has flawlessly resisted the seismic events that shook central Italy, becoming a place of support for inhabitants, civil protection, firefighters and police in the immediate post- earthquake of 2016. The memories of the most ancient past mix together with the more recent ones through the common thread of solidarity and hospitality that has always characterized these lands, today called to live again thanks to the Locanda, a place of sweet memories.
The company
The care of smallest details reflects quality culture. The rooms overlooking the lake offer the opportunity to enjoy unique performances in every season from sunrise to sunset; the rooms overlooking the town, on the other hand, open onto the typical houses of the Abruzzo mountain villages.
Equipped with Wi-Fi and quiet at the same time, they offer a comfortable stay away from stress. The restaurant offers its guests typical recipes of regional and Italian cuisine, prepared with seasonal and strictly local products.
The recipes are always new and rich in an intense and tasty flavor: in the traditional appetizers the famous Mortadella di Campotosto stands out; among the first courses we found the “gricia” (white amatriciana), pasta with saffron zucchini and jowl and the Mausonium pasta (ricotta, sausage and truffle).
They select meat exclusively from local farms: a typical Abruzzese dish that the Locanda offers is the “pecora alla cottora”, a stew of mutton cooked through a very slow boiling process. Depending on availability, they also prepare recipes with freshwater fish, such as pasta with perch, white truffle and porcini mushrooms, pike in green or red sauce.
Without tarts and homemade desserts, you cannot face a day in the mountains: for those who do not give up on physical activity as well as comfort and mountain calmness, the Locanda offers the possibility of doing excursions, snowshoeing and walks in the National Park during the stay. The Locanda and has always promoted collaboration with various sports associations, including: Itinera Hiking School, Montagne Selvagge, Abruzzo Trek, Il cammino delle terre mutate, Movimento Tellurico, Feder Trek and Mountain Evolution. Among the collaborations with cultural associations, the following stand out: Pro Loco di Campotosto, Dottor Clown Italia, A.P.E., Yallers cultural association, Active Languages, Alberto Fasciani and Gaspari Silverii Photography.
Moreover, do not forget to bring your little friends: Locanda Mausonium is pet friendly!
